Earlier in the week, children learned about, school, religion and other aspects of life in Germany. They also learnt about St George's day and joined the rest of the school in creating a giant St George's Cross. It has been a fantastic week of celebrating differences across the whole school, while reminding ourselves of the importance of laws in Britain and how we can contribute positively to society.
As part of this week’s Multicultural Week activities, Year 2 enjoyed a German feast, including sausages, hams, cheeses, and home-made bread. Children were very adventurous in trying flavours they had never tried before and many discovered new foods that they really like the taste of.

As part of their Unit of Enquiry looking at how people work together to achieve a common purpose in a workplace, Year 5 have written some information posters, following their visit to the Bata Reminiscence Resource Centre Open Day. The actual Bata factories are just across the road from our school and it has been great for the children to focus again on local history, with so many sources of evidence readily available to us.
We are really grateful to the BRRC for their support during this unit of work, they have provided us with so much information and so many interesting artefacts. “It’s really fun here because you get to do loads of projects, like the baby chicks in 2HM. At lunchtime, we came and were allowed to hold and stroke them. We watched some of the eggs hatching and noticed that one of the chicks was rolling another egg around, maybe trying to help it hatch. We have learnt that yellow chicks are boys and the orangey-brown ones are girls.
Before we went to the National Gallery, we didn’t think it would be fun, but it was and we learnt lots about the pictures. It’s good here because even when we have had news that has made us upset, our teachers and friends have helped us.” Year 2 have been patiently waiting for several weeks, first for the delivery of their eggs, then for the arrival of their chicks. During Science Week last term, Year 2 prepared to receive their eggs, learning about life cycles and what chicks would need to survive and grow healthily. When the eggs arrived on Tuesday, they were well-prepared and set the incubator up in a special place. They have kept a log of the date and time of the birth of each chick, recording this information in a table. They agree that the best things come to those who wait! As with the birth of any new born, Year 2 have welcomed many visitors from across the school to see the new arrivals and they have all left with new knowledge about eggs and chickens. Early Years and KS1 have been enjoying getting used to using iPads, we have purchased a set of 30 iPads for Early Years and KS1 to use- they will soon be as efficient as many of the KS2 pupils (especially Y6) are in their use of iPads, which benefit the learning of the KS2 pupils.
If you know of any brilliant educational apps for either KS1 or KS2 we’d be delighted to hear from you. This week 6LC have been working hard, taking the 2014 SATs papers before the actual SATs start in 2 weeks on May 11th. We have had a busy week in Science looking at forces - we made and tested parachutes to investigate air resistance - some of the parachutes were fantastic, some required modification! We also made boats out of ‘cooking foil’ to investigate floating and sinking, again, some of the boats were very stable and remained afloat in ‘choppy, stormy’ waters and some lilted to the side and sank in calm waters.
Writing
The star award assembly focused on writing skills on Friday and it was fantastic to see the efforts made in every year group. Children are working hard to choose effective vocabulary and vary their sentences to engage the reader. Here are a few examples of the children’s work: Year 1 – instructional writing First we washed hands. After that we got a cup. Then we chopped a banana and apple and banana. Finally we enjoyed our fruit. We loved our fruit. Year 5 – information texts History about the Bata Shoe Factory As a result of recession in the 1930s, Reverend Brown of Tilbury approached Thomas B to suggest the new industrial estate in East Tilbury. This resulted in the local people being able to apply for work. In May 1933, the first celebration of Bata men arrived in Essex. They were all shown the factory. Year 6 – Descriptive writing Beginner’s Guide to Vikings Watch the breath-taking creature rip through the freezing North Sea. Follow your eyes to the worshippers Odin and Thor. They are building and sharpening weapons of death and modifying their armour. Detect the low noises and sounds as the troopers prepare for the battle of their lives. Battle tunes echo within the warship as the creatures create a plan. Focus on the reflection of the sun on the swords, reflecting like mirrors. Smell the freshly cooked meat as the warriors prepare to feast. Reading Last week, the achievement of all of the children who read 5 times per week over the last half term was celebrated. Over 200 children’s names were placed in a draw and Harry in 6JD was the lucky winner of a £20 cinema voucher. Let’s see how many children can read 5 times or more this half term. This week, Miss Clark did a presentation for Year 5, providing information about her visit to China in the Easter holidays. The focus of the visit was to learn about Chinese culture and education.
Kacey Baker from 5DC commented, “I thought Miss Clark’s presentation was amazing. I learned that China is very different to England in many different ways. For example, the traffic system and the marketplaces that sell fresh fruit and vegetables. Education is different in China. There are more children in the classes and they learn in a different way. I found the presentation informative. At first, I did not know a lot about China, but now I have learned new facts about the country.” |
