Children in Year 5 made ice-cream manually using just flavoured milk, sugar, ice and salt.
We made predictions about what we thought would happen, explaining our reasoning. We then observed and described how the milk changed state from liquid to solid in the process of making ice-cream.
5AA said that their ice-cream was delicious and everyone wanted to try the experiment again at home. Some people in 5KF said that theirs was salty - perhaps they accidentally put the salt in with the milk instead of in with the ice in a separate bag! Why don't you give it a try: Put half a cup of flavoured milk in a zipper bag with four tablespoons of caster sugar. Place this bag in another small food bag and tie it to give it extra protection from the ice and salt mixture. Put some ice and half a cup of salt into a large zipper bag, then place your small bag of milk mixture inside this larger bag. Seal the large bag securely and shake vigorously for five minutes. Carefully open your small bag, being careful not to allow any salty water to get into it as you serve and enjoy your ice-cream!
