Oh my, we have been busy in 1RJ!

In 1RJ last half term we were looking at the designs of buildings and structures within environments, and the materials that were available to build them. We researched buildings all over the world. We found out that they are not all the same.

We looked at the environment in and around school, comparing the indoor and outdoor spaces and found some very obvious differences.

For the last week of term we started to look at a part of the painting called ‘Mr and Mrs Andrews’. One of the things we were asked to do was to think about who the people were. Some of us thought that the man was a pirate, a soldier or Guy Fawkes and that the lady was a queen, Cinderella or a poor girl. We then focused on the bench in the painting. We went out around the school looking at different types of seating and thought about what we would do on a seat or bench. We picked our favourite place to sit that was outdoors. Some of us got to make a life size bench and the rest of us made small scale benches. This half term we are looking forward to finding out more about the painting and our school trip to The Tate Modern.

This half term in Reception

In Reception this half term we have been having lots of fun learning and finding out different things about superheroes.

Each week we look at a different topic linked to Understanding of the World and Expressive Arts and Design. We looked at floating and sinking, materials, growing, and using colour for a purpose. In Literacy, we watched a video clip of Banana Man, acted out the scene and took photos. We then wrote speech bubbles to link with what they would have been saying in the photo.

We made our own superhero identities by looking at different superhero names, powers and costumes and then came up with our own ones. We then created our own superhero profile. On Tuesday 27th January we had superhero day. We dressed up in different superhero costumes and completed a range of super missions within the Reception classes. Spiderman came to visit us and we had our photo taken with him. For our Enterprise Market our parents were able to buy our photos with Spiderman and take them home.

On Friday, we had our superhero assembly. We got to show our parents the lovely work we have done. At the end we sang a superhero song that we had learnt during the week; we all sang beautifully.

This week we are introducing ‘Take one Picture’. We are looking at the painting ‘Mr and Mrs Andrews’, and discussing what is missing from the picture as well as what we would expect to see. This will link in with our topic of farm animals next term.

Update - Humanities Team

We have been learning a range of skills linked to our Unity of Enquiry. Children have helped to lead their learning through their tuning in sessions.

In Year 1, we have been looking at different buildings and structures. We looked at the differences between them around the world. We especially looked at the buildings in London, which we will be exploring further on our trip to London next half term. In Year 2, we have been creating maps of the playground and used our own keys to help us identify the different areas. We also looked at physical features and tried to identify them in the playground.

In Year 3, we have been learning about the history of cinema. We have had lots of fun making our own films. We also looked at extreme weather and compared different countries. In Year 4, we looked at global warming and the importance of looking after our planet. We discussed how to be a ‘green’ and compared the United Kingdom with other countries around the world.

In Year 5, we have been learning about our local area. Using maps, we explored East Tilbury and compared the differences between the past until now.

In Year 6, we learnt about the Titanic. We looked at how and where the ship was built, thinking about the different materials they used back then. We also discussed the social differences they had within the Titanic and the different classes.

On the 9th March we are having a Common Wealth Day. We will be looking at what the Common Wealth is and investigating some countries. We will be having a session for the children to have a look at each class’ work and celebrating what we have done.

2KJ say, "Education for all!"

“I do not want art for a few, any more than education for a few, or freedom for a few.”
These were the words of artist and poet, William Morris whose beautiful work we have been studying in 2KJ. He was born in 1834 in East London and believed in a fair society for all and he had an early appreciation for the beauty of nature. We noticed this in his artwork, which was very floral, so we created pictures based on his wonderful designs. First, we chose a colourwash base and then, once dry, we added symmetrical flower patterns using crayon pastels. We have also been busy making coil clay pots which we aim to glaze and decorate using our flower pictures for inspiration. This art and craft is linked to our Unit of Enquiry on how things change as they grow.

Look at our Year 1 hands...

The Central Idea for our first Unit of Enquiry was ‘Knowing who we are helps us to live together successfully’. We thought about what this meant, then came up with some ideas to start our learning. We learnt about many roles which are needed in our community, plus how we work together in many situations. We were visited by some fire fighters too.

At the end of the unit, we wanted to share something with our community. For our Equity Action we joined together with the community at Coal House Fort and decorated our hands using various resources. We then took the hands back to school and put them together to form the piece in the photo.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who played a part in this again.

What didn't 4SM do? Now that's the question...

Yes, 4SM have been extremely busy, between writing play scripts for the Spring Production and choreographing dances, they set up a highly efficient production line to create an array of goods for the Enterprise Market. Using maths and English skills, they scaled up recipes to make batches of chocolate delights to sell and researched and designed packaging.
They also enjoyed Mrs Lowe's workshop learning about how important product knowledge and understanding of customer needs are for successful businesses.

2HM set up a very efficient card printing initiative at the Enterprise Market. They produced a selection of designs for customers to choose from and did some careful calculating to decide on the best prices to maximise profits.

In maths, we have been learning how to multiply two, three and four digit numbers. We have been taught how to calculate the answer using long multiplication. The main reason why we are learning this is because it helps us in life it is an essential skill used every day. For example, if you were to go to the shops and purchase four packets of sweets. The most obvious calculation would be to multiply them together to work out how much it would cost for all four.

During Aspirations and Enterprise Week, 1GS were drawing, cutting and sticking to music, creating scenes to represent their emotions as they listened to music.

We love Frozen!

In Nursery last week, we looked at the story of Frozen, retelling the story from pictures and discussing the characters of Anna and Elsa. We thought about what children liked from the story ‘A Sister More Like Me,’ and why it is good that we are all different.

We also invited our parents in for a Frozen and Superhero Day. We had great fun together, making glittery snowflakes, investigating ice, making crowns and masks, constructing castles from recycled materials and acting out scenes from the story.

As part of our moving to music theme in PE, we also danced to the song ‘Let it Go’!
