Y6 Teacher Blog 07.12.2022
A busy week in our penultimate week of the Autumn Term. On Tuesday we had our last swimming session – the pupils had final assessments for certificates of achievement and played fun games in the pool. On Friday we had our regular half term Curriculum Day, our focus this time was Design Technology. We made, or rather are still making, waistcoats for a bear/doll/other toy. This was a super day with pupils showing some really good sewing ability and persevering when faced with new skills to learn. We have also discovered some potential fashion designers of the future! We will be continuing and completing our waistcoats on Monday morning and then look forward to welcoming Y6 parents/carers into our classrooms during the second half of Monday afternoon to take part in a craft activity – decorating Christmas tree baubles or designing a door hanging. Miss Coldwells We’re so excited in Year 6! This week saw us welcoming December – we can’t wait to put up our Christmas trees!
Next week we will be enjoying our last week of swimming, where we are all looking forward to a week of fun and inflatables in the pool. We also enjoyed an afternoon of rewards for all the children who had completed all their homework for this half term! In English, we have been writing a diary entry from the point of view of a Jewish child experiencing the event of Kristallnacht (The Night of The Broken Glass). The Year 6 staff have been so impressed with the children’s independent ideas and vocabulary. In Maths, pupils we have been continuing our learning on fractions – Miss Coldwell’s favourite. More specifically, we have been deepening our knowledge on finding fractions of amounts; some even found tricky amounts like 6/7 of 8.4 Despite it being so close to Christmas, the children have been working incredibly hard across all subjects in the curriculum. A big pat on the back to everyone! This week in 6CP we have been writing a diary entry in English about a Jewish person during World War II, who was being persecuted by Nazis. Also, we have taken part in our swimming lesson on Tuesdays (we go to Blackshots in the morning). We designed a waistcoat in DT before and after swimming, these will be used when we have our ‘Curriculum Day’ - we will be creating waistcoats from various resources we have in school.
During Science on Monday, we were looking at the effect of refraction in water. We discovered that if you place an image under a cup of water, it looks like it disappears when you fill it up and look from the side. Also, if you have an image one side of a cup, the image gets refracted the opposite way. Written by a 6CP pupil Computing Blog This half term pupils have engaged with a range of learning across the Computing curriculum. In recent visits to Key Stage 2 classes, pupils were keen to explain how they have been creating a range of media including stop frame animation, audio, video and websites. As holidays approach, playground aspirations often turn to hopes of apps, games and devices for Christmas. As ever, we remind pupils and parents to have open conversations about age appropriate content, what to do if things make you uncomfortable and other key themes of online safety. It is great to enjoy the creative freedom that devices, apps and online platforms provide us with. In the spirit of encouraging creativity, below are details of competition being run by an organisation where there are two graphics tablets on offer for both KS1 and KS2. Pupils need to create a FIFA World Cup 2026 logo using the software that they would be familiar with if following the Teach Computing resources. These are free and available from home. ![]()
During our RE lessons in year 4 we have been learning about a range of religions. We started by looking at Hinduism. These are some of the things I learnt. Hindu's have specific rituals. Rituals are a set of actions that people follow. They are actions that can be done at home, outdoors or at a holy shrine. Diwali is celebrated by Hindus. Diwali is the festival of light. Rangoli patterns are used as decorations in many homes.
Written by DO in 4SA This week, we have been allowed to inspire the school with our nation’s sporting successes, predominately the Men’s World Cup, but also - closely associated with this - the Women’s Euro 2022 success. Incorporated with this we delved into a range of arithmetic questions to play a game of Mathematics Top Trumps - which was very much enjoyed across the year group! We then looked into the lyrics of ’It’s Coming Home’ and the inspiration to Frank Skinner and David Biddiel to creating the song … though some were shocked to find out 56 years was the duration since our last win. Finally, in English, we explored grammatical challenges to solve the problem of who stole the World Cup; this time Pickles had not stolen the trophy, but a hypothetical character instead.
Below is just some of the work from across the week. Year Five have been a pleasure to teach and continue to impress. |
