Last week, the majority of Year Six had their transition week; there were various schools attended by the pupils which helped to give them an experience of what secondary school is truly like. The pupils took part in a plethora of lessons, including the following: English, maths, science, history, PE, RE computing and many more. Pupils also looked at the importance of mental health throughout their transition week; they explored how mental health impacts many people within an academic environment. Those who attended St Clere’s had the experience of getting a bus from East Tilbury – this replicated the route which most of the pupils would take to get to their secondary school. All pupils were made aware of the expectations for their secondary schools, irrespective of location.

Harley, who visited St Clere’s, told us the following: “I really enjoyed transition and I the way they taught PE and Science was extremely enjoyable; this was because we were mainly in smaller groups which we were able to choose.”

Sara, who visited William Edwards, said that: “I really liked it there and I felt more grown-up. My favourite lesson was PE because we did a lot of activities and I am looking forward to going there next year.”

This week we have been preparing for our SATs next week. We have been completing extra grammar lessons to help our understanding of the curriculum in preparation for our tests.

We have also been taking part in French conversations about what food we like and dislike – some of our conversations were interesting; we have been justifying our choice of favourite food. We also started to look at comments about the food and what we might say about it.

During D&T, we have been attempting to recreate a bird’s eye view of an Ancient Greek city in an attempt to create our own version in the style of the Ancient Greeks.

Some Year 2 and Year 6 Highlights from Last Term

19/2/2019

In Year 2 we continued to consolidate our learning about multiplication. We solved multiplication problems that included the 2, 5, 10 and 3 times tables. We even took part in an investigation regarding the number of spots on different ladybirds. It was a lot of fun! In English we wrote diary entries in character as Zog from the book by Juila Donaldson. We applied what we knew about how to write in first person and the past tense.

Half term two was a very busy half term for Year 6; we had a fantastic few weeks. Pupils conducted their own remembrance service, with many reading the names of those from the surrounding areas who had fallen during conflicts. Following the service, the public were invited back for tea and biscuits and enjoyed performances from each Year 6 class. In English, we created our own warning narratives using a variety of figurative devices; the children were experimental with their characters and their storylines.
We also had a very interesting time in science, learning about light and reflection. Children had the opportunity to work in pairs to create their own periscopes using household materials, which they enjoyed immensely.

Of course, this great learning and attitude continued into half term three - well done Years 2 and 6!

Year 6 Focus

11/2/2019

In recent weeks in year six we have been very busy. We have been focussing on how to apply decimal problems to various aspects of maths, especially how we can solve SATs–style questions. The pupils have been multiplying, dividing, adding and subtracting as well as solving reasoning problems which all involve decimals.
In English we have been using our knowledge of non-chronological reports to create our own one which includes a hybrid animal which we have created; we have fused two creatures together to make one amazing animal. We have had a variety of hybrid animals including:  a fusion of a Gopher Turtle and a Side-Striped Jackal – named a ‘Tackal’; a Shark and a tortoise; a seal and a seahorse and many more peculiar animals.
During our foundation sessions, we have been comparing and contrasting technologies from the early 20th century with those of the current day: we have looked at what early televisions and radios look like; what an original vacuum cleaner looked like as well as irons and cooking utensils.
We have continued our weekly tests, sometimes including past SATs papers; the children complete their weekly tests in their sets and the teachers aim to provide the pupils with their results before the end of the week. These tests are sent home so they can review their test results as well as look where they may need to improve.

Another Successful Project Evening

Thank you to all those parents and carers who were able to attend last week's project evening, where children were able to display and share their various homework projects from this half term.

As always, we really value your feedback, which again has been overwhelmingly positive. Have a look at some of the work shared by Mason (Y6), Emelia (Y3), Billie (Y2), Sutijay (Y2), Paige (Y2) and Aaliyah and her big sister (Y2).
Please also remember that while these half-termly homework projects will continue, pupils still have opportunity to practise and consolidate their basic skills through their personal logins to Mathletics, Active Learn and other online tools that the school has subscribed to. Challenge within these programs can be managed and adjusted by class teachers, so do speak to your child's class teacher if you have any further feedback or requests regarding the level of challenge in these activities.

I’ve really enjoyed my learning this half term, particularly PE and Science. In PE we have been practising basketball and hockey  skills, which I think I’m getting better at. I’ve even taken a shine to gymnastics! In gym, we have learnt to create, rehearse and perform group routines, linked to synchronisation and canon.

In Science, we are learning about the circulatory system and how it works. Yesterday, we made blood using objects to show: red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma and platelets. It was really interesting to think about how much blood is in our bodies.

On Wednesday 11th of January 20 people from year 6 went to the Apple store in lakeside. While we were there, we made a short movie on our aspirations for the future. Each person who went there received an Apple T-Shirt, a wristband memory stick to put our movie on (and to keep) and a certificate. We really enjoyed this and would love to do some more film editing.

On Wednesday 11th January 2017, 20 students from year 6 were chosen to go to the Apple Store (Lakeside). We were chosen because of our behaviour, attendance and always doing our homework. We were congratulated by our year 6 class teachers for our astonishing actions. When we arrived we were greeted by two men named Lee and Amil. They showed us to the mac books and produced our very own movies in partners, of our aspirations for in the future. This project was placed onto a U.S.B wrist band for us and our families to revisit. However, we also received an Apple t-shirt and a certificate with our names on. Each and everyone really enjoyed ourselves (even the teachers). Although, we had a very short time (nighty minutes) we all enjoyed ourselves very much. Furthermore, we developed more skills from this experience. Being very grateful we thanked the helpers so much.

This week in 6CP we have been out in our sets, we have three sets three or English and three for maths.  On Monday in English we were writing letters to chalky from the book blitz boys. In maths we were revising long multiplication. When it was Wednesday afternoon we made our way to our local library to look at what the Bata shoe factory and East Tilbury looked like back in the day. After 45 minutes we left the library and returned back to our school to work on Mathletics and Bug Club (Active Learn Primary). When we had finished working on Mathletics we collected any certificates that we might have earned. Then it came to Thursday, and we started doing our sets again. During our sets we planned a letter from Winston Churchill to Adolf Hitler trying to prevent the war. In our maths sets we revised a little bit more of our long multiplication, as some people found it a little bit difficult. It’s now Friday and we have been doing sets in our own classes it was really fun. In math we had some old SATS papers to complete in 50 minutes if we didn’t it did not matter. Next we have P.E and we are doing gymnastics. Thank you for reading our blog.
